UDO Recommendations: Join us January 8 for all the latest

Last November, Decatur residents and business owners gathered to discuss what is and isn’t working with our zoning and development regulations. Specifically, they identified areas where the things we say we want aren’t supported by the rules we have in place, and offered up a host of ideas for improvement.

The assessment and balancing of all these suggestions is now complete and will be presented Wednesday evening, January 8, from 7-9pm. Please make plans to join us in the City Commission meeting room where, in addition to an overview summary, you’ll have opportunity for topic-specific review and comment.

Here’s where we are now and how the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) process will play out from here:

The weaknesses and challenges identified to date served to inform a variety of recommended approaches for the UDO. These recommendations are reflected in a draft “Table of Contents” — essentially an outline of how the complete UDO will be organized — that will be shared Wednesday evening, adjusted based on the feedback received, and then presented to City Commission on February 3. Upon the Commission’s approval, the project team will then begin in earnest the lengthy work of sorting, compiling, writing and editing the final code in line with the approved outline.

This work is expected to conclude around September, 2014, and will include additional opportunities for public input and review along the way.

If you’re unable to make it, there are still plenty of ways to plug in and get your thoughts on the record. Provide ideas and recommendations in the comments section below or submit more general comments and questions directly to the city here.

Check back with us regularly for updates.
