Speak Your Mind: Last call for online Transportation Plan input

Kicking off an update to Decatur’s 2007 Community Transportation Plan, nearly 100 residents gathered at the Rec in late October to consider future mobility and connectivity throughout the city.

In addition to a variety of hands-on activities, officials unveiled two online opportunities for residents, particularly those who couldn’t make the meeting, to further plug in and contribute — a community survey, and a wikimap where respondents can identify problem areas throughout the city.

Online input closes Friday, Dec. 15. If you haven’t chimed in, now’s the time to do so.

Join us in the new year for our next community meeting: Thursday, February 1, 6:00-8:00pm at the Decatur Recreation Center. Details are tentative so stay tuned.

  1. John Phillips says

    Hello,
I thought I’d start by mentioning that the Pedestrian signal switch at the intersection of Clairemont and Michigan doesn’t work on one side (it works if you’re at the Michigan terminus, but not from the opposite side of the road). The same issue exists at the intersection of Superior and Scott Blvd (it works if you are on the Great Lakes side, but not from the opposite side).
I also notice there is a lot of confusion with the traffic signals at the intersection of Clairemont and Michigan. I often see people go through the first traffic signal at Clairemont and Wilton Dr. (heading towards downtown) and stop at the second one directly in front of Michigan.
Finally, I’d like to mention that regularly have close calls on runs –
mainly on Church St. and on Clairemont – with drivers running red lights (not yellows) as well as with drivers on mobile phones who have jumped onto the sidewalk. It’s a real concern when I think of my kids and others walking from school, etc. I’m not sure how to tame that other than more traffic officer presence.

  2. The transportation plan needs to keep up with changes in transportation technology. Autonomous vehicles will be on the roads to bring Marta riders to the stations & for short trips in surrounding areas much sooner than transportation corridors can be designed, funded & constructed.
Much of the proposed capital outlays for mass transit will not be required if autonomous vehicles are available in the time frames currently discussed.
